Introduction

I had the privilege of visiting Amravati in 2020 and it remains one of my most cherished memories in India. I visited three different churches, including one in the home of a group of redeemed “Eunuchs,” as they referred to themselves. Another day I witnessed a demon possessed man asking for help as pastors and others crowded around to pray over him. With another church we traveled to a secluded water park on the outside of town, where they conducted numerous baptisms in secret. Afterwards we shared a family lunch on someone’s bed which served as their living room couch. While the Grandparents held the kids, the constant sounds of a refurbished ceiling fan and honking car horns filled the room as we traded stories and laughed at our younger selves. Outside their two-room home, the atmosphere was just as lively.

In the vibrant and overcrowded city of Amravati, Maharashtra, this dedicated community of Christians and pastors is making a significant impact despite facing unique challenges, such as overcrowding and limited employment opportunities. Though the same geographic size, Amravati has a strikingly higher population density than Las Vegas, with approximately 16,800 people per square mile, compared to Las Vegas’s 4,785 people per square mile. This translates to Amravati being over 252% more densely populated, reflecting the dynamic life within its compacted limits. It is literally bursting at its seams.

One particularly inspiring church plant, Transformation Church, is navigating extraordinary circumstances as God works in the hearts of eunuchs who have been abandoned by their families and employers. These individuals strive to avoid returning to life on the streets after discovering new life in Christ. The church leaders and congregations face social pressures, economic challenges, and limited resources as they seek to serve their community. They have developed a plan to purchase 10 sewing machines and fabric to create garments, which they will sell two by two, as they are cared for and equipped to proclaim the gospel and make disciples along the way.
